Fu Baoshi and Du Fu’s Poetic Axis

“Fu Baoshi’s Poetic Painting Axis of Du Fu”

The axis of “Du Fu’s Poetic Painting”, in modern times, is painted by Fu Baoshi in paper, with colors, 110.5 centimeters vertically and 32.4 centimeters horizontally
The title of this painting is: “In the February of the Guiwei period, the Vajra slope in Baoshi went down the mountain to write the poetry of Du Gongbu.” With the seal of “Fu”, “Often Drunken”, and “Trace Dahua”, Zhu Wenfang was printed
The year of Guiwei was 1943< From the inscription and postscript, it can be seen that this picture was created based on the poem "Beauty" by Du Fu of the Tang Dynasty. The protagonist of the original poem is a woman who was abandoned during the war. She suffered several dislocations, her brother died miserably, and her husband sought new love. The coldness of life made her feel the desolation of the world. However, she did not succumb to fate, resolutely heading alone to the deep mountains, living a secluded life in an empty valley adjacent to vegetation. Fu Baoshi frames the picture in the final sentence of this poem, "In the cold weather, the green sleeves are thin, and at dusk, the bamboo is trimmed." This depicts a beautiful woman in the cold weather, with no decorations on her head, no flower arrangement on her hair, a haggard appearance, and her back leaning against the bamboo. The slanting bamboo stems suggest the beauty's similar upright, flexible and noble sentiments. The painter portrays the character of self-reliance and perseverance of a weak woman with a tragic fate with implicit and implicit ink, making her image both tragic and sublime
Du Fu’s writing of this poem is actually a self-defeating gesture, reflecting his true feelings for the country and nation that he always cared about under the difficult circumstances of being without food or clothing. The painter used this poem as a way to express his concern for the country and the people during the Anti Japanese War
