Xu Beihong’s Old Hall Ancient Cedar Map Axis

Self title: “The ancient fir trees in the old hall of the Western Tianmu Mountain stand towering above the sky, with no less than ten thousand copies. I lingered in the memory of my twenty three year autumn trip. I mourned for the great loss.” The seal was “mournful”, with a white seal
The twenty third year refers to the twenty third year of the Republic of China (1934), when Xu Beihong was 39 years old
In August 1934, Xu Beihong returned home from holding art exhibitions in Venice, Florence, Rome, and Moscow, the former Soviet Union. In September, despite the tiredness of his journey, he led Sun Duoci, Yang Jianhou, Wen Jinyang, Lin Jiaqi, and others from the art department of Nanjing Central University to Zhejiang Tianmu Mountain to sketch. He actively creates while carefully guiding his students. This is a sketch of an ancient fir tree in front of an old hall painted by him
This image is cleverly conceived, using contrast and concealment to express the towering momentum of Chinese fir. The picture does not directly depict the overall picture of the ancient fir tree, but rather draws a circle of low ancient temple walls in front of it, the low height of the wall sets off the high height of the ancient fir tree. Although the shielding of the wall hides the roots of the ancient fir tree, it expands the space imagined by the viewer and ingeniously enhances the towering momentum of the ancient fir tree.
