Self title: “On the evening of Xinwei’s autumn outing in Qixia, I wrote here. Sad Hong.” The seal “Sad Hong’s Seal” is printed in white< Xin Weinian was in 1931, and Xu Beihong was 36 years old at the time
The title of Wu Qian on the upper left of this painting reads, “A thousand miles of broken Hongs offer a distant view, and twenty years of fragrant grass hang a sorrowful heart. After reading the works of Beihong twenty years ago, I have written the poetry of the Stone Forest. The title of Wu Qian on the Jiawu Festival was written in 1954, marking the first anniversary of Xu Beihong’s death.”
Xu Beihong advocated “learning from the outside” in landscape painting creation, depicting real scenes in nature, and opposed the “style landscape” that had been unilaterally pursued by the “Four Kings” since the early Qing Dynasty. This picture was painted by him after visiting Qixia Mountain in Nanjing, with a novel idea and unique scenery. The right half of the picture depicts rugged and steep cliffs, while the left half depicts the autumn pine trees with crisscrossing branches. In the harsh living environment, trees demonstrate their tenacious vitality with their lush branches and leaves, embellishing the colors of nature with their green and red leaves, while Xu Beihong creates immortal art chapters with vivid ink, adding luster to the beautiful scenery of Qixia Mountain.
