[Xu Beihong’s picture axis of wutong with cats and butterflies]
The axis of the picture of wutong with cats and butterflies, in modern times, is painted by Xu Beihong, in paper, with colors, 91.5 cm in length and 60.9 cm in width
Self title: “In June of Yuzhou, Xie Brothers and Liu filled me with a vivid butterfly, a scene in front of the window of the Chinese Literature and Art Society. In the heat of boredom, I wrote this poem. Sad Hong.” In the lower right corner of the painting, there was a seal of “Washing □ Playing” by Zhu Wenfang
This picture is a joint creation of Xu Beihong and Xie Zhiliu. Xie Zhiliu (1910-1997), with a strong Chinese character, is skilled in calligraphy and painting, as well as in theory and appraisal of calligraphy and painting. During the Anti Japanese War, Xie Zhiliu resided in Chongqing and, along with Xu Beihong, was a professor in the Department of Art at Central University and a member of the Chinese literary and artistic society. The Chinese Literature and Art Society was built in Guanyinyan, Chongqing during the Anti Japanese War, and the host was Mr. Hualin. At that time, a group of talented and progressive painters gathered in the community. In 1945, Xie Zhiliu met Xu Beihong through the introduction of famous painter Zhang Daqian. Xu praised Xie Zhiliu for his erudition and talent
The picture shows that in the hot summer, the leaves of wutong trees are wide and thick, overlapping with shade. A long haired cat finds a resting butterfly through the gap of the leaves. It is naughty and stealthily eager to catch butterflies. The plot is vivid and full of interest
The wutong leaves in the picture are characterized by intermittent ink lines, then colored with a mixture of blue, yellow and green, and the stems and veins of the leaves are painted wet. The integration of sketching and rendering, the blending of water, color, and ink, successfully demonstrates the lightweight and moist texture of the leaves.
