“On the Gentleman and the Little Man” is an imperial article written by Hongli in the 48th year of Qianlong (1783) of the Qing Dynasty. Its purpose is to warn the monarchs and ministers that “the deeds of the Gentleman and the Little Man should not be taken lightly”, and to warn their officials and sons to abandon the disputes between their families and friends in order to avoid “the disaster spreading to the country”< This volume is woven based on the imperial script of Emperor Qianlong's running script. The main method of production is Qi Kuo technique, with individual characters with long vertical strokes using the weaving technique, which involves weaving one or several stitches between the openings where the color of the characters meets the ground color, so that they are joined together to enhance fastness. Nearly 600 characters are meticulously woven into the entire painting, faithfully and vividly displaying the solemn and orderly layout of the original work, the rigorous structure of the font, the echoing strokes between the lines, the direction of the movement of the strokes, and the changes in the position of the center of gravity. This can be described as a combination of form and spirit, demonstrating the proficiency of the tapestry technique
The four characters “Zhiyuan Mingshen” inscribed by Emperor Qianlong in the poem pond are inscribed with the seal “Qianlong’s Imperial Brush”. The scroll head is stamped with five seals: “Five Blessings and Five Dynasties Hall Ancient and Rare Treasure of the Heavenly Son”, “Eight Marches and Eight Deliberations Treasure”, “All Things in One Spring”, “Using the Pen in the Heart”, and “Taking Benefits in the Wide Pursuit”. At the end of the scroll, there are two types of inscriptions: “Imperial Brush in the Middle of the New First Moon of Guimao”, and “Treasure of the Ancient and Rare Heavenly Son” and “Juri Zizi” Zhu Yin.
