The term “Supreme Emperor” appeared very early. According to the Records of the Historian, Liu Bang, the Emperor Gaozu of the Han Dynasty, honored his father as Supreme Emperor to show his respect. Throughout the dynasties, emperors have been known as the Crown Prince, also known as the Supreme Emperor. In history, the people who served as the Supreme Emperor had different circumstances due to the different circumstances at the time of giving and receiving, but most of them were forced by the situation to abdicate reluctantly. Throughout Chinese history, the Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty is probably the only one who deserves the reputation of being both respected and powerful
On the third day of September in the 60th year of Qianlong’s reign (1795), the 85 year old Emperor Qianlong summoned the emperor’s son, grandson, prince and minister, and announced that the 15th son of the emperor, Prince Jia, Ting Yan, would be the crown prince, and the next year would be the first year of Emperor Jiaqing’s succession. At the end of the period, he would return to power. In Xinzheng the next year, Emperor Qianlong held a ceremony of giving and receiving in person and issued an imperial edict: “… The crown prince will take the throne on the first month of the third day of the lunar calendar. I will personally rule the Hall of Supreme Harmony and give a seal, which can be called the Supreme Emperor.” In this way, Emperor Qianlong ended his 60 year long career as an emperor and became the only and last Supreme Emperor in the history of China in the Qing Dynasty
At the same time as announcing the passing of the throne, Emperor Qianlong also made active preparations for the upcoming life of the Supreme Emperor. On September 28th of the same year, he also issued an edict: “After I returned to the government, I will use the first jade treasure with the Xi character to carve the treasure of the Supreme Emperor, and will make the imperial” The Treasure of the Ten Quan Old Man “engraved as the book of the Supreme Emperor, using the prosperity of the Xi Dynasty.” After that, under the instruction of Emperor Qianlong, craftsmen in the inner government made various “Treasures of the Supreme Emperor” using different materials
The poem “Self inscription on the Emperor’s Treasure”, made by Emperor Qianlong, is inscribed on the periphery of this treasure. Emperor Qianlong attached great importance to this seal, which became evidence of the identity of the Supreme Emperor, and was one of the most important treasures of Emperor Qianlong, with significant historical value
