Thatched Cottage Picture Axis, the seventh year of the Wanli reign of the Ming Dynasty (1579), Song Xu’s painting, paper, ink, 66.8 cm in length and 32 cm in width
This picture has a long title, with the signature of “Li Songxu on the 20th of October of Wanli Jimao”, and the seal of “Chu Yang” Zhu Wen, “Li Songxu” Bai, Zhu Wen, and “Shimen Shanren” Bai Wen. “Jimao” is the seventh year of Wanli (1579) in the Ming Dynasty. Song Xu was 55 years old
This axis is painted with hedged thatched houses, bamboo and wood, giant rocks in Pituo, and two scholars sit and talk. The style of painting is clear, the composition is simple, the ink is green, and the artistic conception is high. The inscription shows nostalgia for the former association and poetry in Sun Kehong’s Xuejuyuan, which also shows that this picture is made for his old friend Feng Wanfeng. The picture should depict the scene of the painter and Feng discussing poetry and Taoism.
