[Xu Wei Ink Grape Map Axis]

Ink Grape Map Axis, Ming Dynasty, Xu Wei’s painting, paper, ink pen, 165.4 cm vertically and 64.5 cm horizontally
The title of this painting is: “Half of my life, I have become an old man. The independent study howls in the evening wind. There is no place to sell the bright pearl at the bottom of the pen, and I throw it in the wild vine. Tianchi.” The seal “Xiang Guan Zhai” is sealed. The collection includes: “Zhu Peng’s True Appreciation”, “Chen Xilian’s Seal”, “Peiping Han Deshou’s Authentic Seal”, “Xia Shan Lou’s Collection of Calligraphy and Painting”, and “Hushui Over-eye”
This picture was once collected by Li Zuoxian and Chen Xilian in the Qing Dynasty
The picture shows a grape with luxuriant leaves, tangled vines and numerous fruits. The author uses cursive strokes to draw, with bold but not wild strokes. The leaves and fruits are sprinkled with light ink and gelatinous alum. The ink is dripping soundly and produces excellent halo effect
The poems inscribed in the painting are found in Volume 11 of Xu Wenchang Collection III, which is one of the poems that Xu Wei often writes when painting, expressing the author’s bumpy and painful mood that he never encountered in his life. Influenced by Mi Fu’s style of running script, the inscription in the painting has a compact structure, gentle and generous strokes, smooth and vigorous vertical strokes and strokes, and a calm ending, which reflects his profound artistic skills as a great calligrapher in the late Ming Dynasty.
