[Xu Wei’s picture axis of plum blossom and banana leaf]
The picture axis of plum blossom and banana leaf, painted by Xu Wei in the Ming Dynasty, paper version, ink brush, 133.7 cm vertically and 30.4 cm horizontally
The title of this painting is: “Banana with plum blossom, this is Wang Wei’s painting. Tianchi.” The seal is “ink samadhi”. In the collection, there are various seals of Qianlong and Jiaqing Inner Mansions in the Qing Dynasty
This picture adopts a half-sided composition. The plum blossom and plantain are concentrated on the left side of the picture, and only small lake stones are used to decorate the bottom of the picture to find the balance between the sides. The whole painting is painted with light ink to show the dark and thick snow scene at dusk. The banana leaves and plum flowers are sketched and dotted in light ink with gentle and fine strokes, not seeking resemblance in form, but with a little general idea. It fully shows the artist’s high personality and creative level of being confident and not inferior to his predecessors, and “the big leaves are better than the moji snow” (see Xu Wenchang’s Draft, Volume IV, “Banana” Poems)
Regrettably, this painting has been seriously damaged by mildew and insect erosion during its spread, and there are many additional strokes when it is framed, such as the words “Wei”, “Hua”, and the veins of banana leaves, which slightly detracts from the spirit of the original painting. In addition, the left side of the painting heart was cut, which damaged the integrity of the painting
