Zhao Zuo Changlin Snow Map Axis

[Zhao Zuo Changlin Snow Map Axis]

Changlin Snow Map Axis, Ming Dynasty, Zhao Zuo’s painting, silk version, color setting, 141.5 cm vertically and 60.7 cm horizontally
This regular script has the following title: “Snow in Changlin. Zhao Zuo’s painting.” The seal of “Zhao Zuo’s seal” and “Zhao Wendu’s seal” are stamped after it
The painting depicts the bleak trees and snowcapped mountains and forests in the middle of winter. The pine trees and branches of various miscellaneous trees in the close view are covered with thin snow. There are distant mountains looming near the frozen lake shore. A hermit in the hut under the forest looks out from the window with his sleeve. The painter painted the silk ground with light ink, represented the rocks and trees with thick ink and covered with white powder, and painted the decayed water plants with light ochre and white powder at the foot of the bank, highlighting the cold and shrinking atmosphere. The works are bold and unconstrained, with many quick side strokes, which clearly bears the characteristics of Zhao Zuo’s landscape painting in his later years, and is one of his relatively large handed down works.
