Ren Renfa and Zhang Guolao See Emperor Ming

[Ren Renfa Zhang Guolao Meets the Ming Emperor]

“Zhang Guolao Meets the Ming Emperor” volume, Yuan, Ren Ren Ren attack, silk, color, 41.5 cm vertical, 107.3 cm horizontal
This volume is the representative work of Ren Renfa’s figure story painting of the Yuan Dynasty. The picture depicts the story of Zhang Guolao, one of the “Eight Immortals” in the legend, and his disciples visiting the Emperor of the Tang Dynasty. The picture captures Zhang Guolao’s spell before the Ming Emperor. On the right side of the picture, an old man sat on an embroidered pier, dressed in blue, with his palms up, smiling and making speech. A little boy in front of him put out a small donkey with all the saddles and bridles in the cloth bag, and the donkey ran like a horse. On the left, a man wearing a yellow robe and a Futou cap sat on a chair with his head slightly lower, showing concern for what had happened. This man is a majestic figure with a solemn face. He is obviously Li Longji, Emperor Xuanzong of the Tang Dynasty. The four attendants standing behind him looked different. The color of the whole picture is bright and quaint, the expression of the characters is vivid and delicate, and the dynamic performance of the moment is extremely successful. The running of the little donkey forms the visual center of the whole picture, which focuses the eyes of all people and enhances the story of the picture. Zhang Guolao’s composure and ease, and Tang Xuanzong’s slightly surprised expression, were well performed, reflecting the superb artistic level of figure painting in the Yuan Dynasty
