“Palace School” refers to the school set up for the children of the royal family, and “National History” refers to the history of a country or a dynasty. “Proverbs” is a style used to persuade others or discipline themselves. According to the biography of the History of the Yuan Dynasty, Boqi “taught the scriptures for Xuanwen Pavilion and the children of Qi Li minister in 1341 (the year from the Yuan Dynasty to the Zhengyuan Dynasty). Every time he spoke, he often said the purpose.” The two precepts mentioned above were the teaching materials used at that time
At that time, Zhou Boqi’s seal script had the reputation of “the crown of the dynasty”. Tao Zongyi said in the book “The History of Calligraphy” that “Boqi’s seal characters were written by Xu Xuan and Zhang You, and the structure of his strokes had a clerical style.” Yang Shiqi of the Ming Dynasty believed that “the character structure of his works was built on the old stele of Li Si in Mount Taishan.” Although Boqi learned from his predecessors, he did not stick to the ancient method. He took part in stone drum writing in the structure and writing techniques, and the strokes were both square and round, making many changes. The overall style was characterized by clumsiness and fragility in its regularity and maturity, which was different from the modest works of a kind that were stable and symmetrical. This curly character is rigorous and dignified, and its strokes are steady and rich. It is the best work of Zhou’s seal script.
