This picture shows a young man in red robe wearing an official hat and a jade belt on the waist riding on the horse’s back. The man has a moustache, holds the reins with his left hand, holds the whip with his right hand, and lightly steps on the stirrup with his right foot. He looks elegant and self-sufficient. The horse is strong and strong, with its left front hoof slightly raised, showing a marching trend. The layout of the picture, the figure image and the realistic painting method of horses were deeply influenced by the horse painting in the Tang Dynasty
The collection of this picture in the Yuan Dynasty is unknown. Zhao Mengyu, Zhao Mengfu’s younger brother, said in the postscript written in the third year of Dade (1299) that “every scroll cannot be removed”, which seems to have been in his collection. The postscript of Zhao Mengfu’s Sun Zhaolin in the 26th year of Zhizheng (1366) shows that the volume was hidden in the city of Pingjiang (today’s Suzhou) at the end of the Yuan Dynasty. After entering the Ming Dynasty, there were stamps collected by Anguo, Yuan Mengli, Xiang Yuanbian and others. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, he entered the hands of Wang Shimin, and was collected by his son Wang Shan, a great scholar of the Kangxi Dynasty, before entering the Qing Dynasty’s internal government. This volume contains the postscript of Zhao Mengfu’s brother Zhao Mengyu, nephew Zhao Youchen, son Zhao Yong, Zhao Yi and Sun Zhaolin’s Zhao family. It is rare in Zhao Mengfu’s calligraphy and painting works. After that, there are inscriptions of Zhao Mengyu, Zhao Yong, Zhao Yi, Zhao Youchen, Zhao Lin, Ni Yuan, Yu Wen Gongliang, Yexian Puhua, Cheng Xun, Chen Runzu, He Yizhen, Shi Wenxin, Zhu Jingyuan, Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty, etc. There are collection marks of Anguo, Yuan Mengli, Xiang Yuanbian, Wang Shimin, Wang Shan, etc
It is recorded in the “Allegorical Compilation” and the “Rang Pear Hall”
