Zhao Mengfu’s Sunflower Axis

[Zhao Mengfu’s Sunflower Painting Axis]

Sunflower Painting Axis, painted by Zhao Mengfu in the Yuan Dynasty, with paper color, 31 cm vertically and 23.8 cm horizontally, is in the collection of the Palace Museum
The self-title of this picture is “Zi’ang sketching from life.” The seal is “Zhao Zi’ang” and Zhu Wenyin
Identification seal: “Yudi” Zhu Wenyin, “Lanling Gongce Calligraphy and Painting Collection Seal” Zhu Wenyin
Zhao Mengfu advocated that painting is expensive and ancient, and he imitated the painting styles from the Tang Dynasty to the Northern Song Dynasty. This picture adopts the “yellow body” of Huang Quan’s father and son of the Western Shu of the Five Dynasties, which outlines the painting method of filling colors. The lines are thin and strong, and the colors are bright and clean. Because of “sketching” from real life, okra is more vivid than “yellow body”. The picture is concise, delicate and elegant, reflecting Zhao’s pursuit of antiquity and elegance. It is the representative work of his early flower-and-bird painting
