Shackford traveled and worked as an English teacher in South China in the late 1920s and early 1930s (possibly in Lingnan University in Guangzhou)

Lingqu, formerly known as Qin Chiao Canal, Zero Canal, Douhe River, Xing’an Canal and Xiang Gui Canal, was a great project created by the ancient Chinese working people. It is located in Xing’an County, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, and was built for navigation in 214 BC. Lingqu Canal flows from east to west, connecting the Haiyang River (the source of Xiangjiang River, flowing from south to north) in the east of Xing’an County and the Darong River (the source of Lijiang River, flowing from north to south) in the west of Xing’an County. 1930年6~7月，沙克福德经梧州、桂江、漓江、桂林到达兴安县灵渠，游历广西，拍摄了下面的照片。

兴安县隶属于广西壮族自治区桂林市，位于广西东北部，兴安县是湘江、漓江二水的发源地，境内地形多样而复杂，西北和东南为山地，山峦重叠，沟谷溪流纵横，西北部为越城岭山系，逐渐向西南倾斜；地处北回归线附近，属中亚热带湿润季风气候区，雨量充沛，日照时间长，积温多，霜期短。

灵渠，古称秦凿渠、零渠、陡河、兴安运河、湘桂运河，是古代中国劳动人民创造的一项伟大工程。位于广西壮族自治区兴安县境内，于公元前214年凿成通航。灵渠流向由东向西，将兴安县东面的海洋河（湘江源头，流向由南向北）和兴安县西面的大溶江（漓江源头，流向由北向南）相连，是世界上最古老的运河之一，有着“世界古代水利建筑明珠”的美誉。
