Long sutra roll of Buddha names and inscriptions used during a ceremony on last day of lunar calendar year. Section of text followed by two painted rows of Buddha figures, with a name below each figure (“Praise to…”). Ink and colour on paper. Inscribed.

Comments:Zwalf 1985Like other scrolls at Dunhuang this contains a simple enumeration of the Thousand Buddhas of the present age (‘kalpa’). The robe colours of successive Buddhas alternate regularly as do those of the Thousand Buddhas painted on the walls of the Dunhuang cave temples.
