Comments:Hizo Nihon bijutsu taikan Vol 3On the third of the third month in the year 353, under the Eastern Jin dynasty, the celebrated calligrapher Wang Xizhi carried out a purification ceremony at Lanting on Mt. Huiji in Zhejiang Province. On that occasion, he is said to have amused himself and his companions by setting a wine cup afloat on a meandering stream, commanding each of them in turn to compose a poem before the cup reached him, on pain of being obliged to drink the wine if he failed to do so. The present work depicts the party by the stream at Lanting. The third of the third month was the Peach (Girls’) Festival, and the depiction of literary men furiously wracking their brains under the peach blossoms is amusing.
