Description:
Fragmentary stucco figure in the shape of two joined heads. The one on top represents the Buddha, clearly recognisable by the third eye (urna) in the middle of his forehead. The second head has a fierce expression. Both heads might originally have been part of a representation of the eleven-headed Avalokitesvara. According to legend, the Bodhisattva vowed not to rest until all beings had been freed from the cycle of birth, life, death and reincarnation. But struggling to comprehend the needs of so many, his head split into eleven pieces. This enabled him to hear the cries of the suffering people better. He additionally also grew 1000 arms with which he aided them.
