Avalokitesvara is a Buddhist Bodhisattva, the left flank attendant of Amitabha, and one of the “Three Saints of the West.”. Buddhism describes him as a compassionate Bodhisattva, saying that all living creatures in distress need to recite their names, “the Bodhisattva immediately observes their sounds,” and goes to save and liberate, hence the name (see “Dharma Hua Sutra – General Menpin”). Due to the taboo of the Tang Dynasty about the name of Emperor Taizong Li Shimin, the word “Shi” was removed, and it was briefly referred to as “Guanyin”. Guanyin was originally a male figure, but after Buddhism was introduced to China, from the Northern and Southern Dynasties onwards, the statue of Guanyin in Central China was transformed into a female figure, which has continued to this day
In the picture, Guan Shiyin holds a clean bottle with willow branches in her hand, dignified and steady, with a kind and affectionate expression in her eyes. She seems to be looking down at a group of living beings trapped in deep water and fire, ready to go forward and save suffering. Fu Baoshi, who rarely painted Buddhist themes, painted this merciful and boundless Buddha in the war of resistance, demonstrating the painter’s beautiful hope for ending the war as soon as possible and freeing 40000 compatriots from the bitter sea
