“Fu Baoshi’s Painting of Returning to the Villa through Wind and Rain”

The Painting of Returning to the Villa through Wind and Rain album, in modern times, is painted by Fu Baoshi in paper, with colors, 31.7cm vertically and 37.5cm horizontally
The title of this self titled painting is “The Painting of Wind and Rain on the Double Ninth Festival of Bingxu. The lower notes on the Vajra Slope of Baoshi.” The seal is “Private Seal of Baoshi”, with the seal of Bai Wenfang, and “Trace Dahua”, with the seal of Zhu Wenfang
The year of Bingxu was 1946
The picture shows a person holding an umbrella and walking back to their home along the mountain road – a thatched cottage located in the woods. Judging from the swaying shape of the trees and the direction and speed of writing, the wind is gentle and the rain is not heavy. The gentle breeze and gentle rain may be the expression of the painter’s mood at that time. In 1946, the Chinese people had already won the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression. Fu Baoshi was about to leave Chongqing, where he had lived for eight years, in October of this year, and return to Nanjing to continue teaching in the art department of Central University. Compared to the war period, the calm life and the reality of returning to Nanjing will undoubtedly make the painter feel happy, and the excitement and expectation of “returning home” will inevitably occupy the painter’s inner world at this time. The scene of “going home” in the painting should be the painter’s beautiful longing for national stability and family warmth
This picture is donated by Mrs. Fu Baoshi, Luo Shihui.
