The title of this picture is: “The Mid-Autumn Festival of Dinghai, which is in Jiang’s Nianghuazhai, accompanied by friends traveling on the Tiger Hill and returning to the Zhao Changguan Pass, can’t stop the boat from moving forward. Occasionally, there are instant noodles, and this picture is made to record its prosperity. Ha ha. Zhang Hong was 70 years old.” The next seal is “Zhang Hong” and “Jundu”
After the middle of the Ming Dynasty, there were quite a number of works by Wumen painters on the theme of nostalgia for farewell. The Changmen Gate in the west of Suzhou was the place to see off friends at that time. This building with special significance also appeared repeatedly in the farewell pictures and other realistic landscape paintings. The picture of boat blocking at the Changmen Gate depicts not a farewell scene, but a lively scene that Zhang Hong saw with his own eyes when he returned to Zhao Changguan after visiting the Tiger Hill. In addition, the Palace Museum also collected two paintings depicting the Changmen. Lu Zhi’s “Farewell at Haoshang” axis depicts the perspective and the whole of the Changmen and Suzhou City Wall, while Yuan Shangtong’s “Crowding at Xiaoguan” axis depicts the part of the Changmen City Tower and the gate opening where boats compete for crossing. The three works vividly depict the prosperous scene of Suzhou Watertown at that time from different angles.
