[Picture of Ma Yuanmei Shixi Fu]
Picture of Mei Shixi Fu, Southern Song Dynasty, painted by Ma Yuan, silk, colored, 26.7cm long, 28.6cm horizontal
This page is marked “Ma Yuan”. Seal seal: “Lu Wang’s Treasure”, “Mao Lin Xin Jing”, “Amun”, “Yu Teng Private Seal”
In the picture, a group of wild ducks are playing in the misty stream. The mountain stone is painted with the method of chopping and chapping. It is hard and steep, in sharp contrast to the wild duck with light pen and fluffy fur. The inverted and tortuous branches are the unique painting method of Ma Yuan, so they are called “dragging branches to Ma Yuan”. The picture presents a typical diagonal composition, with rocks and plum trees in the upper left part of the picture. The trend of plum tree branches emphasizes the formal sense of this layout. The wild duck at the lower right plays a role in balancing the picture, and is also the finishing touch of the whole picture. A picture of “the prophet of the spring river water heating duck” is infinitely interesting and full of silk.
