Yuju Lotus Boy

[Yuju Lotus Boy]

Yuju Lotus Boy, Song Dynasty, 7.2 cm high, 2.8 cm wide and 1.1 cm thick. The old collection of the Qing Palace
The jade is dark white, carved with a child, wearing a thin sleeve shirt, fat pants, and a long vest. The vest is carved with a square “meter” pattern. The boy’s head is to the left, his right ear is exposed, his hands hold a lotus flower, and the flower is placed on the top of his head
The work is a typical image of a jade boy in the Song Dynasty. The five facial features are simple, and a small number of short arcs are used to express the clothing patterns. Clothes, pants, vests and other costumes appear in similar works. In the Tang Dynasty, there were lotus child patterns in the implements. After the Song Dynasty, there were more jade carving children of this kind. The works had the meaning of “having a baby in a row” and implied good luck.
