[Blue Mountains and White Clouds Map Page]
Blue Mountains and White Clouds Map Page, Song Dynasty, silk version, color setting, 22.9 cm vertically and 23.9 cm horizontally
There is no signature of the author on this picture, and it is stamped with the seal of “Pang Laichen’s Collection of Authentic Works of the Song and Yuan Dynasties”. The title of the running script poem on the opposite page is: “The green mountains dawn, the white clouds fly, and the green mountains dusk, the white clouds return. The green pines are luxuriant, and the moon is bright. Who will know if it is too late.”
This picture shows high mountains and flowing water, white clouds and bright moon. An old man sits in front of the ancient pine Tuanpai to watch the wind and clouds rising in the mountains. The picture is similar to the poetic meaning of the poem “Go to the place where the water is poor, sit and watch the clouds rise” in Wang Wei’s five-character poem “Farewell to Zhongnan” of the Tang Dynasty. This poem was recorded in the section of “pictorial meaning” in Guo Xi’s painting treatise “Lin Quan Gao Zhi” in the Northern Song Dynasty as a title that can be used for painting. From the perspective of the painting method, it is also like the landscape painting method of Guo Xi’s school. The mountain rocks are both chapped and dyed, the pine branches are made of crab claws, the sky is dyed with light ink halo to create a bright moon, the white clouds in the mountains are outlined with ink lines, and the periphery is painted with light ink halo, which perfectly shows the volume of the clouds
The inscription on the poem is written by Empress Wu of Song Gaozong, which is vigorous and very similar to Gaozong, so this picture should be created in the early years of the Southern Song Dynasty
