This picture shows the Medicine Master Buddha, who sits on the lotus throne with his head crossed, with a green and red monk branch in red group flowers inside and a red cassock outside. The left hand holds the medicine bowl, and the right hand holds two six-ringed tin sticks. There is body light and head light behind. The round flowers in the background pattern are outlined with faint red, purple, black, green and other colors
The full name of Herbalist Buddha is Herbalist Glazed Light Tathagata. According to the Buddhist scriptures, he is the religious leader of the Oriental glazed land. It is said that when he became a Buddha, he made 12 vows to eliminate the suffering of all sentient beings, cure the nameless chronic disease, and make all sentient beings happy physically and mentally. Because the Herbalist Buddha can cure all kinds of diseases, relieve the pain of all kinds of stubborn diseases, eliminate disasters and prolong life, the belief in the Herbalist Tathagata is very strong at all levels of society in history. The image of the pharmacist Tathagata is usually sitting with a cross, holding a medicine bowl in his left hand, holding a tin stick or pill or a fixed seal in his right hand, and sitting or standing on the lotus platform
There are many images of the Buddhist Buddha in the paintings of the Dunhuang Sutra Cave. This picture is very similar to the painting of the Buddha of Medicine and the Avalokitesvara of the Five Dynasties in the collection ch.XXI.0015 of The British Museum. It should be a work of the same period
The painting was transferred to the Palace Museum by the National Cutural Heritage Administration and was once exhibited in the Soviet Union. In 1959, the Palace Museum established the Art Museum of the Past Dynasties, and this piece was displayed in the basic display as an art treasure of the past dynasties. The Complete Collection of Chinese Art, Volume of the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties, and the List of Art Museums in the Palace Museum of the Past Dynasties are included in two books.
