[Di Yanguo made white stone Buddha]
Di Yanguo made white stone Buddha, the fifth year of Tang Tianbao (746), with a residual height of 31 cm
This statue was unearthed in Quyang, Hebei. The Buddha statue wears a monk’s branch inside, a chest lace, and a double-necked hanging topless cassock outside. The head is incomplete, the right hand is dauntless, the left hand is on the knee, the knot is folded and sits on the hexagonal cylindrical waist seat, and the cassock is hanging down. The body and clothing patterns of the Buddha are carved in a round way, which is true and natural. On the front and left side of the rectangular base is carved a vow saying: “On November 8, the fifth year of Tianbao’s reign, Di Yanguo, Di □ □, Di Guangchao, Ding’s six women, and □ Lu’s two women, built a jade statue shop for the dead father and mother, and provided for the family.”
The “zai” in the vow is “nian”. From the third year of Tianbao (744) of the Tang Dynasty to the second year of Zhide (757), the Tang Dynasty issued an edict, saying that the year was not included, which should be the result of the order
Compared with the statues of the Northern Qi Dynasty, the white stone statues of the Tang Dynasty in Quyang, Hebei Province, are more plump and rounded in shape, especially the works of Kaiyuan and Tianbaojian, such as Buddha, Bodhisattva, and Luxi, pay more attention to the expression of the body, making the Buddhist sculpture art of this period move to a new stage.
