[Le Miaoxiang Stone Making Thought Image]
Le Miaoxiang Stone Making Thought Image, the second year of Tianbao in the Northern Qi Dynasty (551), 60 cm high
Thoughtful Bodhisattva has a round head, wears a trefoil crown on his head, and the treasure tapers from his ear to his shoulder. His eyebrows are beautiful and his expression is gentle. Compared with the statue before the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the face of this statue has changed from rectangular to circular, the skirt hem has changed from square to arc, and more use of the double hook of the Yin line, the clothing pattern is gradually simplified, giving people a sense of simplicity and nature. The base of the statue is plain, which still retains the legacy of the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the Yuan Dynasty and the Xinghe period. On the back of the base is carved a vow: “On April 25, Tianbao 2, Le Miaoxiang, a native of Lunu County, made a white jade statue (body), with the emperor’s majesty, the king of the milk (Bohai) Sea on the top, the deceased husband, the deceased man and woman, and their own body, and the present family members. They are trapped in the two ways of hell, leaving the suffering and enjoying the happiness, and wishing all living beings in the Dharma world to become Buddha for a time.”
“The king of the milk sea” should be the mis-writing of “the king of the Bohai Sea”. According to the Northern Qi Book, Volume I, in the second year of Putai in the Northern Wei Dynasty, Gao Huan “abolished Jiemin and Zhongxing and established Xiaowu. Xiaowu ascended to the throne and was granted the divine martial arts (that is, Gao Huan. His son was called the Empress of Qi, and he was honored as the Divine Wu Emperor. — The author’s note) The Prime Minister, the Great General of Tianzhu, the Supreme Master, and the hereditary governor of Dingzhou, and was added to the top 150000 households.” Later, he was granted the title of the King of Bohai Sea. Since the Eastern Wei Dynasty, the center of power has moved from the Yuan Wei Dynasty to the Gao family, and the emperor has become a puppet. People only think of the prime minister and the Bohai King. In the early years of the Republic of China, the inscription on the statue of Gao Guiyan in the first year of Wuding in the Eastern Wei Dynasty in Dingzhou included praying for the great prime minister and the king of the Bohai Sea. The second year of Tianbao is the second year of the establishment of the Northern Qi Dynasty, and the statue of Gao Huan is more justified. This practice not only appears in the royal family, but also among the common people, which can reflect the influence of Gao’s family in Dingzhou. Calling Gao Huan the King of the Bohai Sea instead of the Shenwu Emperor should be the continuation of the customary address in the Eastern Wei Dynasty.
