Wang Fengji made the stone Maitreya Buddha in the third year of Xinghe in the Eastern Wei Dynasty (541), with a residual height of 45 cm
Maitreya is like a high bun, with eyebrows and fine eyes, eyes slightly downward, wearing monks’ sticks inside, chest lace up, and cassocks. The cassocks hang in an arc between the legs, the lower edge of the skirt is extravagant outside, the folds of the clothes are undulating and orderly, the hands are dauntless and willing, and stand barefoot on the double-petal lotus. The bottom is a rectangular plain base, and the head is carved with lotus pattern. The pedestal is carved with a vow: “On November 25, the third year of the Great Wei Dynasty, Li Hui’s wife, Wang Fengji, from Shangquyang County, made a statue of Maitreya (body) for Li Jingzhen’s death. The first part was the country, and the second part was the seventh generation of parents. The size of the family was the size of the deceased. The living beings in the border areas died and became Buddhas for a time.”
During the Northern Wei and Eastern Wei Dynasties, the statue of Maitreya was dominated by the image of Jiaojiao Bodhisattva, but in Dingzhou, Hebei Province, it was dominated by Buddha statues, including standing statues, reclining statues A variety of images, such as a sitting figure, show its uniqueness. The statue of Maitreya Buddha was unearthed at the site of Xiude Temple in Quyang, Hebei Province from 1953 to 1954
