This kind of masked performer was called “Elephant Man” in the Han Dynasty. Meng Kang’s note in the Book of Rites and Music of the Han Dynasty: “Elephant people are like those who play fish, shrimp and lions today.” Wei Zhao’s note: “Those who wear fake masks are also like those who play fish, shrimp and lions today.”. Elephant people have a fixed number of people, but the number of people performing may be related to specific programs, not necessarily group dancing. According to the Annals of Rites and Music, “there are five Yu officials, six Chu drummers, thirty regular followers, four regular followers, sixteen regular followers, twenty-nine Qin advocates, three Qin advocates, one imperial follower, nine Yada officials, and a feast of wine.” The Shaofu of the Han Dynasty has Yuefu, which manages the rites and music and the court practitioners.
