Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography Collection in 1909 (2) Shanghai

At the beginning of January 1909, the delegation led by the Oriental Education Investigation Committee of the University of Chicago of the United States set out from Chicago and began a nearly half year trip to China. The delegation went to Japan via Hawaii and entered the mainland of China via Hong Kong to investigate the social, cultural, urban, rural and geographical features of Hong Kong, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, the Yangtze River, Sichuan, Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Beijing, Liaoning and other places, and took a large number of local photos, leaving us precious image data

There were more than 600 photos taken at that time, which were later summarized into an album in 1909In Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography Collection, the editor systematically sorted out the old photos taken at that time, shared them by time and region, and added narrations according to Luo Lin· Zhang Bolin’s diary to take you to experience the Chinese style in the late Qing Dynasty.

The following photos were taken during the delegation’s stay in Shanghai (February 2-8, 1909):

On January 31, the delegation set out from Nagasaki, Japan, and arrived in Shanghai by ship on February 2. After arriving in Shanghai, the delegation was greeted by the staff of the American educational institutions in Shanghai and settled in the Ritza Hotel. Duan Fang, governor of Liangjiang, was in Shanghai. He learned from the American consul that Zhang Bolin and his delegation had come to China. He immediately met them. After the talk, he invited the delegation to Nanjing Liangjiang Governor’s Office for formal talks in the next few days

上海湖心亭附近的一处运河水道,木楼沿着河岸而建,应该是商铺的背面。

罗林上海第一茶楼的“春风得意楼”,始建于清光绪年间,1958年豫园改造时拆除。

上海街景。右侧是一家规模较大“章东明酒栈”,招牌上分别写着“绍酒”、“京庄”、“高粱”等字样,店门口走来了一位年轻的外国海员。

考察团于2月8日中午从上海乘火车赶往南京,并与晚上8点11分到达南京站。
