Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography Collection in 1909 (1) From Hawaii to Japan

At the beginning of January 1909, the delegation led by the Oriental Education Investigation Committee of the University of Chicago of the United States set out from Chicago and began a nearly half year trip to China. The delegation consists of four people in total, Ernest· Dr. Burton served as the head of the delegation, and the members included the famous geologist Thomas Middleton, a 66 year old professor at the University of Chicago at that time; Zhang Bolin, the only son of Zhang Bolin, Luo Lin&middot, works as a daily liaison, living and photographer; Zhang Bolin and a young Chinese translator, Mr. Wang (YT Wang)

The delegation went to Japan via Hawaii, entered the mainland of China via Hong Kong, investigated the social, cultural, urban, rural and geographical features of Hong Kong, Guangdong, Guangxi, Shanghai, Nanjing, Wuhan, the Yangtze River, Sichuan, Henan, Hebei, Shanxi, Beijing, Liaoning and other places, and took a large number of local photos, leaving us with precious image data

There were more than 600 photos taken at that time, which were later summarized into an album in 1909Zhang Bolin’s Chinese Photography Collection, the editor systematically collates the old photos taken at that time, and shares them with you by time and region, and adds narrations according to Luo Lin· Zhang Bolin’s diary, to bring you to experience the Chinese style in the late Qing Dynasty.

On January 4, 1909, the delegation left Chicago, crossed the mainland of the United States by train, and arrived in San Francisco on January 8. At 1 p.m. on January 5, Zhang Bolin and his party took a“ Siberia” The freighter No. 1 came to Shanghai, China, via Hawaii and Japan, and started the journey of China’s investigation

1909年1月15日,考察团乘坐的轮船抵达夏威夷瓦胡岛,罗林回忆他6点半起床后,轮船到岸,晨光下的海港景色迷人,在船上他拍下了当时的景象。

考察团一行在当地的牧师陪同下游览了瓦胡岛,途中经过了一片稻田,这是曾经是一片沼泽地,在来此谋生的华侨开垦下,成为良田,虽然是一月,位于赤道附近的田中,几个华人正在插秧,远处还有一个农人在犁田,除了西式的别墅建筑,依稀可见一幢中式风格的房屋

夏威夷檀香山的一处私家庭院,池塘上有一座木桥,岸边生长着高大的棕榈树。

在小路上,罗林发现了一只孔雀站在路旁,便立即拍下了这张照片。

罗林一行参观了檀香山皇家棕榈园,这是他上午11点拍摄的影像,后来考察团一行参观了一所教会学校,据他回忆,他们看到一个班级主要是中国学生,校长说这些孩子都很优秀,非常忠诚,比白人学生更容易管教,当时很多外国人认为中国小学生只会模仿和死记硬背,校长告诉考察团成员这个看法是错误的。

前往瓦胡岛的Pali山口的路上,登上山顶可以一览海岛美景,途中考察团发现夏威夷的美国人和华人相处很融洽,几乎没有种族歧视的现象,华人的品行深受好评。

当天下午4点,罗林在瓦胡岛的登山途中拍摄了这张照片

1月15日晚上10点,考察团结束了夏威夷的一天行程,随即登上前往日本的轮船,于1月26日到达日本。罗林记录到:1月22日,恰逢中国新年正月初一,在船上就有中国的旅客放鞭炮庆祝新年,中国人都打扮得漂漂亮亮,玩着一种多米诺骨牌的赌钱游戏(麻将)

二、日本(1909年1月26日-1909年1月31日)

1月26日,考察团乘坐的轮船抵达横滨湾,罗林记录到沿岸风光风景如画,富士山从云层中出现,感觉非常漂亮。下午4点轮船靠岸,罗林入住酒店后在街上转了一圈,发现商店只有一两层,大多开门营业,到处都有英文标志,可见日本明治维新的开放程度。

1月27日11点,考察团前往东京,拜访了美国驻日大使,这张罗林拍摄的东京街头照片。

罗林写道东京的建筑多为木制且低矮,日本人比想象的更结实、更粗犷,日本女性看起来脸色红润,很是健康。

1月29日,考察团坐火车出行,在火车上拍摄的箱根山。

1月29日,考察团抵达京都,罗林在雨中游览时拍摄了张照片,位置是在皇宫大门前,画面中几个穿着和服打着油纸伞的日本少年。

雨中的京都日本皇宫城墙,下方的护城河依稀可见,从建筑的造型来看,完全是师承盛唐。

日本京都的街头风光.

雨后的京都,道路上满是车轮的印子但烂泥并不多,两旁的店铺招牌多为汉字,行人脚穿木屐在户外很实用。

京都的东本愿寺

1月29日下午3点,考察团前往神户,抵达后他们参观了由洛克菲勒赞助建立的神户女子学院,并与学院的校长及教授们探讨了日本教育的现状,第二天凌晨1点乘船前往长崎。

1月31日,罗林在神户至长崎间轮船上拍摄的照片,波光粼粼的海面上一艘帆船正在行进中。

1月31日9点半,考察团抵达长崎,上岸后在长崎街市闲逛,直到12点半

1月31日下午4点,考察团登上了前往上海的轮船,这是下午5点左右罗林拍摄的照片,海面上美丽的夕阳景象。

罗林写到这艘轮船之前在长崎补充了动力煤,仅装煤就用了一天,煤产自长崎附近且品质不高,在离开港口后不久,从烟囱中便涌出浓密的黑烟,所以本图中左侧能清晰的看到浓烟。

考察团从日本长崎启程,乘坐轮船于2月2日抵达上海。
