Zhang Bolin’s Collection of Chinese Photography in 1909 (35) Shijiazhuang Tour

On January 4, 1909, an American geologist, Zhang Bolin, and his son, Luo Lin, set out from Chicago and arrived in Shanghai on February 2 of the same year. The following photos were taken by the delegation on its journey to Shijiazhuang (May 15 May 16, 1909) after crossing the Yellow River to Weihui and Anyang:

The delegation left Kaizhangde Mansion (Anyang) at 7:12 am on May 15, 1909, arrived at Handan Linmingguan Station at 9:18, left Shunde Mansion Station at 10:25, arrived at Yuanshi County Station at 12:20, and arrived at Shijiazhuang Station at 1:05 pm. Shijiazhuang was not big at that time, Except for the names on the timetable, they are not marked on the map at all, but they are located at the intersection of the Beijing Han Railway and the railway to Taiyuan. The traffic location is important, and they will gradually develop in the future

他们是下午1点零5分到达石家庄站，因为下午没有开往太原府的火车，考察团选择了在石家庄某处客栈过夜，从画面中看，当时的石家庄就是一个普通的村庄。

下午3点左右，罗林徒步向附近的山丘走去，他发现这片平原，无论从开挖或者是凹陷的道路上看去，总体上都接近于黄土，大部分地方都没有鹅卵石。

麦田里的麦子长势良好，田野风光看起来美不胜收。

罗林沿着大路，走了大约有十来里路，前面的山已经不远了，他看到一大片绿油油的小麦，认为很大程度上要归功于当时中国人勤劳的灌溉方式。

罗林在麦地旁，看到有趣的灌溉场景，特地拍了下来，他回忆灌溉的水是从井里取来的，有时用手抽一桶接一桶，有时用一头驴或一对驴操作的水泵，水被倒入主灌溉沟渠，从那里有不同的支流将水输送到田地的不同部分。

罗林在返程的路上，拍下了崎岖不平的道路，以及两旁的田地风光。

考察团于1909年5月16日早上离开石家庄，前往太原。
