In the late 1920s and early 1930s, Shackford traveled and worked as an English teacher in southern China (possibly in Lingnan University in Guangzhou)

From June to July 1930, Shackleford SutraWuzhou,Guijiang,Lijiang,Guilinarrives atLingqu in Xing’an County, visited Guangxi and took the following photos.

The Guijiang River, one of the first class tributaries of the Xijiang River system, the main stream of the Pearl River basin, originates from the first peak in Guangxi— Maoershan (Huajiang Township, Xing’an County) At the southern foot of the old mountain boundary in the northeast, it flows southward to Rongjiang Town and Lingqu, which is called Lijiang River; Then it flows through Lingchuan County, Guilin City, Yangshuo County to Gongcheng River in Pingle County, which is called Guijiang River; Then it flows through Zhaoping County and Cangwu County to Wuzhou City and joins Xunjiang River, the main stream of Xijiang River. The total length is 426 kilometers, and the drainage area is 19288 square kilometers

桂江，珠江流域干流西江水系一级大支流之一，其上游大溶江发源于广西第一高峰—猫儿山（兴安县华江乡）东北的老山界南麓，向南流至溶江镇与灵渠汇合称漓江；然后流经灵川县、桂林市、阳朔县至平乐县恭城河汇合称桂江；再流经昭平县、苍梧县至梧州市汇入西江干流浔江。全长426公里，流域面积19288平方公里。
