Victor· Victor Segalen (1878-1919), a famous French poet, writer, sinologist and archaeologist, is also a doctor and ethnographer. His life has a deep relationship with China, and he is also famous for writing about China. As a French naval medical doctor, he has lived in China for a long time and traveled many times. He has deep insight and rich perception of China’s long civilization and unique culture, and has created a large number of poems, essays and novels inspired by this

In February 1914, Xie Gelan and his delegation set out from Beijing, passed Luoyang, Henan, and entered Shaanxi for investigation

February 16. Lintong County. The archaeological team has found the tombs of King Wu of Zhou, the founder of the Western Zhou Dynasty in the 10th century BC, King Wen of Zhou, his father, and King Cheng of Zhou, his son

In early March, the archaeological team came to the Qianling Tomb from Xi’an, where the third emperor of the Tang Dynasty, Gaozong Li Zhi, and his empress, Wu Zetian, were buried. On March 6, Xie Gelan found a stone horse carved by Han Dynasty (2nd century BC) near a tomb. He was very excited and found“ It is the oldest and most ingenious art piece by far”. This stone horse should be the one excavated in the following picture

We can see that although the Qianling Tomb is a joint tomb of Emperor Gaozong of the Tang Dynasty, Li Zhi, and Empress Wu Zetian, it was never robbed, but the Qianling Tomb in 1914 was desolate and dilapidated, which is completely different from what it looks like now, not to mention how brilliant the tomb was when it was first built

I found some modern pictures of the Qianling Tomb and compared them with a group of old photos, so that you can have a clearer understanding of the Qianling Tomb in history
