In February 1909, William Middleot, an English explorer and plant collection expert; Purdowm was established by Charles· of Arnold Botanical Garden of Harvard University; Professor Sargent commissioned to investigate and collect plants in China in order to find plants suitable for the harsh climate in New England. He traveled from Shanghai to Tianjin, Beijing, Hebei, Shanxi and Shaanxi, and arrived in Minxian County, Gansu Province in April 1911
