In March of the first year of the Heavenly Apocalypse (1621), Dong Qichang wandered around the West Lake and drew this axis in the temple. The poems on the paintings were originally written by Chen Jiru, a good friend, and later were often used in other paintings. In addition to this piece, this poem is also found in the “Gaoyi Painting” painted in the style of Ni Zan in the 45th year of Wanli (1617) in the Forbidden City in Beijing. From the close view of the hillside trees, the pyramidal main peak across the river, and the various hills and ridges listed in front and behind, to the cigarette tree hut dotted by the mountain, it seems that they all call on the “Nanzong” famous artists’ styles recognized by them, and are a good example of their “integration” with their clear brush and ink.
