- Description:
Dong Qichang mentioned in his postscript that he had seen a landscape painting by Ni Zan at the home of Wang Yusheng in Suzhou. The painting had four quatrains written on it by Song Monk Fa. This work not only follows the style of Ni Zan, but also imitates the original painting and poems. However, according to memory, only three of them are copied, or it is slightly different from the original poem. Wang Yusheng was the great grandson of Wang Ao (1450-1524), a famous official. He was once the magistrate of Chengtian, and was the same as Dong Qichang. In this work, the composition of the two banks of the Ni Zan River is changed into a far-reaching space with multiple mountains and water extending to the distance, and the plane where the foot of the mountain is located is tilted, so that the picture presents a subtle movement of tilting to the left and down; The trees in the painting are more abundant, and the shape of the mountain is also changeable and solid. However, the elegant and simple style of Ni Zan’s paintings still shows through the folding belt chaps and the belt stretching far away mountains.
