- Description:
The calligraphy achievements of Emperor Xuanzong of the Ming Dynasty are often hidden by the painting name. Later generations commented that his “calligraphy is based on brothers Shen Huating, but can be developed with strength beyond maturity.” This is a work given to Lang Zhong and Cheng Nanyun in the sixth year of Xuande’s reign (1431). Its ending is close to that of Zhao Mengfu (1254 – 1322), reflecting the fashion since the beginning of the Ming Dynasty. However, the brushwork is fast and the beginning and end of the brushwork are not modified. Cheng Nanyun, in the Yongle period (1403-1424), taught the Zhongshu Sheren with his ability to write. He is good at calligraphy and painting, especially in seal script and clerical script. In the Collection of Xuanzong Imperial Poems, there is also the Cursive Script Song given to Cheng Nanyun by Xuande in the seventh year.
