- Description:
This painting is titled “Landscape” by Wang Meng in the Second Collection of Imperial Poems. It was mentioned by Emperor Qianlong in Huai’an when he returned from his first southern tour. Wang Meng (1308-1385) is famous in the painting, and the rocks are also crisscrossed with curly “cow hair chaps” and dark moss points to form a “Wang Meng style” dynamic mountain like rising clouds. However, the effect of this painting tends to be flat, which is suspected to be a masterpiece of the Ming Dynasty painters to follow his style. The Emperor Qianlong likened the waterside pavilions and figures in the deep forests as the seclusion where the immortals of longevity and Wang Ziqiao practiced. Perhaps he thought of Shen Deqian and other old officials whom he met briefly during his southern tour, hoping that they would live a long and healthy life during their retirement.
