Comments:In the 1980s, Wang Qi and other printmakers turned to modernism rather than the propaganda of the previous decades. Here, Wang illustrates busy urban life without an ideological message. This is the second in a series of seven prints called ‘Life in the Big City’ (1985–87). He was clearly inspired by the 1925 woodcut series ‘The City’, by the Belgian artist Frans Masereel.Wang Qi was one of the most prolific printmakers in China, adapting his subjects and styles over a career of almost 70 years. This print along with Quarrymen (1980,0630,0.133) and Old Vine over Ancient Wall (1999,0705,0.18) reflect his versatility as an artist and convincing artistic responses to the dramatically changing times.Published: Frances Carey, ed. (1991)
