Description:
Photograph (black and white) from an album; A caravan of men, mules and donkeys crossing the frozen Yamdrok Lake. This is probably the Mission caravan on their return journey from Lhasa in February 1937. The caravan is walking in single file across the lake and the man at the front of the line seems to be tapping the ice to check how strong it is. The village of Nagartse can be seen in the distance. The low hills around the lake are free of snow but the landscape recedes towards a high snow-covered peak, Nordzin dzongka, in the centre of the image. The lake near Nagartse was relatively shallow and therefore readily froze over during the winter months, providing a shortcut for travellers crossing the lake
