Comments:The Stars Group was a short-lived but significant avant-garde group of self-taught artists who were active in Beijing between 1979 and 1983. The Stars exhibition in 1979 was a watershed moment for artistic freedom in China, taking place a few years after the end of the Cultural Revolution. The exhibition was initially held outside of the National Art Museum of China, Beijing, without permission from the authorities. When the artists were forced to remove their works, a protest was organised that led to permission being granted. The exhibition was subsequently attended by more than 80,000 people. The British Museum has an important collection of 30 woodblock prints by Ma Desheng, a member of the Stars Group, produced from 1979 to 1981. The museum also has two recent ink paintings by Qu Leilei, another member who is now based in the UK. The gelatin silver prints (2019,3041.1-3) are newly reproduced from photographs taken at the 1979 Stars Exhibition. They document the exhibition and provide important context to the works in the BM collection. Two of the photographs show Ma Desheng and Qu Leilei at the 1979 exhibition.
