Comments:Haizan was an accomplished painter in the scholarly ‘Nanga’ style of which he was one of the last masters. He was more significant, though, as a calligrapher, and about 1878 was one of the first to go to China to study the ancient skills to which the Japanese had long been denied direct access by the political isolation of their country.
