Comments:The manual is composed of 141 sheets by Prince Pu Quan and Katherine Talati; ink or ink and colours on paper or silk; showing motifs to compose landscapes. The sheets are loose and stored in a brocade box, apart from three which are framed. Jay Bird was given to Katy Talati when she departed from China to London in 1948. The bird is depicted in meticulous brushwork (gongbi), while the pine branch is rendered in more spontaneous strokes (xieyi). Not restrained by styles traditionally practised in either court or literati circles, Pu Quan demonstrates here a combination of both techniques (bangong banxie). Known for his horse and landscape paintings, Pu presents a rare subject with Jay Bird, a remarkable work within the artist’s oeuvre.
