Comments:Pair with 1881,1210,0.1135. Hizo Nihon bijutsu taikan Vol 3These hanging scrolls with landscapes showing, respectively, a multistoried, Chinese-style building and pine tree, and a pavilion standing by the side of a lake, both have square seals with the name Kantei left white on red. A dozen or so works with seals reading “Kantei” – including, besides landscapes like the present work, flower-and-bird pictures and human figures – are known at present, all of them characterized by the lucidity of the treatment and the economical composition. In the present work the mountain, cliffs, buildings, and trees are done in a style employing the straight, thick, “hatchet mark” lines unique to oriental art, using a rich black ink with touches of light color; the pictures lack a sense of depth, but the total effect is fresh and visually appealing.
