Comments:Hizo Nihon bijutsu taikan Vol 3Nukina Kaioku (1778-1863) was a typical member of Literati circles in the late Edo period. The work shown here is stable and dignified, flawless in its perfection; it is almost as if one were looking at a work by the Shoko school of Ming China. To the modern eye that seeks individuality above all, the result may be somewhat unsatisfactory, but Kaioku himself would almost certainly have dismissed such “individuality” as the pursuit of trivial novelty. One senses in the work his absolute faith in Chinese culture.
