Comments:Clark 1992 A Chinese beauty, probably Yang Guifei (see no. 72), her face partly seen through the transparent gauze of a fan, stands behind a vase of large peonies on a red lacquer stand. Nothing is known of the artist Utagawa Toyonaga. Elements of the style – particularly the face – are reminiscent of the Maruyama-Shijo school of Kyoto, though overall the work is thinly painted and the line is not particularly steady. The artist’s name suggests, of course, that he is a pupil of Toyokuni. For the time being he should simply be classified as a minor Utagawa pupil, probably working in the Kansai region. The seal implies that his ‘na’ (official name) was Kiyotaka.
