Comments:Hizo Nihon bijutsu taikan Vol 3Mori Tetsuzan was not so literal-minded as Sosen in his depiction of animals; one of the things he learned from the Maruyama school, in fact, seems to have been the importance of harmony and balance in the picture as a whole. However, in the process of bringing together his animals and the objects he chose to convey their setting, he achieved an effect that, while laudably balanced and harmonious, was somehow flat and failed to get to grips with the subject. This painting, which is rather large for a hanging scroll, shows five deer beneath red-leafed maples in a landscape dotted with autumn grasses. It is possible that the artist was aware of the motif of deer grazing on sacred pastures that occurs in Chinese painting.
