Description:
Jacket; part of woman’s festival and market costume As.1998.1.66 to 68 a & b. Made from dyed indigo diamond twill cotton. With added triangles at sides to created flare, very wide sleeves, fastens by ties under arms. Decorated at neck with pink silk satin cloth embroidered in greens and purple silk thread with satin stitched motifs of birds and leaves. Back has semi-circular panels with wax resist pattern, with embroidery as at neck on lower back. Sleeves have yellow, white and black circular pattern.

Comments:On special festival days women wear silver ornaments on their hair with a coloured band around forehead, similar to ties on this head cover.Text from Corrigan 2001: 33: Duyun aity area, qiannan prefecture. Fe,ale festive jacket. Collared long sleeve jacket, curved at the bottom edge and fastened on the right side with a side opening. The base cloth is hand-woven diamond twill, dyed indigo with a good sheen on the outside. the upper sleeves and upper back panels are wax resist. The silk satin epaulets, neck and front facings are embroidered in satin stitch and outlined witha bound core thread, couched on. Two small red wool panels in the lower back are similarly embroidered.
