Description:
Jacket; part of woman’s festival costume As.1998.1.327 to 331. Sleeveless, collar is large rectangle set open at right side. Base cloth of hand-woven cotton dyed indigo. Front has no decoration except at shoulder edge. Rear top has shadowy under-design of wax resist, and embroidery in silk in cross and other stitched. Embroidery is in geometric patterns based on squares, with snow-flake type patterns, with small bird and butterfly motifs. Colours are ivory with touches of soft pink and yellow. Lower back is framed on three sides with border pattern similar to top with straight lines of stitching in matt white cotton. Collar has binding of bought white cotton and brown wool stitching edging.

Comments:This costume is a type worn by older women – younger tend to wear pink. Several jackets may be worn together. Probably made circa 20-30 years ago when owner was young.Text from Corrigan 2001:28: Huaxi, Guiyang City. Female festive jacket. Hand-woven indigo-dyed cotton. There are shadowy underdesigns of wax resist on the back, echoing the main embroidered decoration, which is worked in silk in cross and associated stitches.
